3M’s Ann Getting: ‘It’s good to be home’

Posted: Friday, Feb 7th, 2014

Ann Getting took over as plant manager at 3M Brookings just a little over a year ago, and she’s already in the middle of a plant expansion that will add 29 new manufacturing jobs. Brookings 3M produces hundreds of medical and surgical products, ranging from tapes and bandages to cold packs. One of 3M’s largest operations, Brookings has the second-highest manufacturing throughput among the company’s 200 plants.

• Plant manager settles into her new life in Brookings

BROOKINGS – Ann Getting’s family arrived in Brookings just over a year ago. It was a harsh transition from the lush bluegrass fields of Kentucky to the frozen tundra of eastern South Dakota.

Brookings’ new 3M plant manager had ample warning: when she made her first visit a few weeks before, she arrived in bitter cold, just after a blizzard. One of the plant leaders came to meet her at the 3M apartment, in part to make sure she didn’t get lost in the ice and snow, and in part to make sure she didn’t turn around and head back to Kentucky.

“Before I came, he told me, ‘Be sure you wear a warm coat. Be sure you have a hat and gloves. Warm gloves.’” Getting says. “Of course, I grew up in Iowa. He didn’t know that. I’d lived in Minnesota. He didn’t know that. He was just so concerned about my safety, just genuinely concerned. That was my first experience here; it led to (meeting) many others who were that kind, that concerned.”

The weather hasn’t improved in the year the Getting family has spent in Brookings – it’s still miserable. But neither has the new manager’s opinion of the workforce she inherited: she thinks it’s the best. Period.
