Project Lead The Way: A head start for engineers

Lisa Weier, who teaches Project Lead the Way: Gateway to Technology at Mickelson Middle School, looks over a 3-D design with a student. Over the last seven weeks, PLTW students worked on a series of projects that culminated in engineering a doghouse. The class is new to MMS this year and has helped to reduce class size during the school’s Encore period.

BROOKINGS – Baxter was an American cocker spaniel in need of a doghouse. Matt, Adam and their 20-some fellow students were ready to engineer that house, thanks to the principles they learned in Mickelson Middle School’s Project Lead The Way (PLTW): Gateway to Technology.

Every MMS student is taking PLTW this year, as one of five required Encore classes (the others are Art I and II, music, and technology). Each class lasts seven weeks. In that time, PLTW teacher Lisa Weier aims to help her students understand and appreciate engineering, and perhaps consider it as a future career.
