The Bingo action at the VFW Post No. 2118 in downtown Brookings on Thursday evening is fast-paced and players check their cards carefully, as numbers are called at intervals of about 9 seconds.

Bingo going big in Brookings

BROOKINGS It's 7 o'clock Thursday evening and the action at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post No. 2118 in downtown Brookings is under way, with Darwin Tolzin calling the numbers: "I-22 I-two two, next number, O-68 O-six eight, O-62 ... O-six two, and so goes the pace, with a number called every nine seconds.

Once the number calling starts, there's no time to be unattentive. With just a few more numbers called comes the sound of a winner BINGO!

If there's anybody in town who personifies Brookings Bingo, it's Tolzin. He's a past-commander of the Brookings VFW post and now serves as quartermaster and Bingo chairman.

Bingo is held at the downtown post on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. Mondays are fundraisers for a variety of local organizations; Thursday and Fridays are for the VFW.

What became Monday night Bingo was started by Tolzin on Wednesday nights in 2004, while he was coaching a girls fastpitch-softball team.
