Council sidesteps bank vs. credit union debate

BROOKINGS – The request was a simple one.

The Brookings City Council was being asked by a local banker to lend its support to the state bankers association’s call for a federal review of the tax exemptions enjoyed by credit unions and Farm Credit Services (FCS) agencies.

The credit unions pay no federal income tax, no bank charter taxes or sales taxes, Kevin Tetzlaff told the council, and he suggested that since the two groups compete for the same customers, “Now is the time to level the playing field.”
