Men (and a few women) march down Main Avenue Monday evening for the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event sponsored by the Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter. This is the first year Brookings has hosted the walk, which was to raise awareness of domestic abuse and to raise money for the shelter.
As of this morning the shelter had not yet tallied the amount of money raised. Associate Director Ashley Dahl said about 255 people wore the red high heels as they walked, while another 100-115, including athletes, covered the route wearing red shoe covers.
“It was very well attended; we were really happy with the turnout,” Dahl said. “A lot of groups kind of surprised us – we had a couple groups that brought 24, 26 people on their teams.”
One arm of the fundraiser continues: The shelter is selling “Walk a Mile” calendars featuring local business people and others sporting their red heels. To purchase a calendar or a koozie, contact the shelter at 692-7233 or go to Brookings Radio. Another calendar is planned for next year, this one featuring the top fundraisers from this year’s walk.
