Cobblers rally to down Bobcats, 3-2

Posted: Friday, Oct 18th, 2013

Lauren Coughlin heads a throw-in pass past the outstretched arm of Rapid City Central goalkeeper Therese Wilhelmi and defender Paula Miller for a goal during the first half of the Bobcats’ 3-2 loss to the Cobblers in their opening game of the 2013 South Dakota Soccer High School Championships at Yankton Trail in Sioux Falls on Thursday.

SIOUX FALLS – Despite Brookings being a newcomer to the South Dakota Soccer High School Championships, the Bobcats didn’t show any sign of nerves and held an early advantage in their tourney-opening match against Rapid City Central before faltering in the second half in a 3-2 loss to the Cobblers on Thursday at Yankton Trail.

Lauren Coughlin’s header off an Alexis Gannon running hand-stand throw in got the ‘Cats on the scoreboard in the 20th minute of play, but it didn’t take the Cobblers long to respond as Shelby Ashland got past the Brookings defense before beating goalkeeper Maddy Reed to tie the score at 1-1 in the 23rd minute.
