More than 8,500 solar ovens provided by HSOP

BROOKINGS "Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness."

That proverbial saying well applies to Haiti Solar Ovens Partners, which Rick Jost, a lay missionary of the Dakotas Conference of the United Methodist Church, has headed up for the past 14 years.

The project is aimed at helping Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. The country has been plagued by deforestion, and its troubles were further exacerbated by the earthquake of 2010. HSOP, based in Brookings, distributes high-quality solar box cookers to Haiti. They can take advantage of one natural resource that Haiti has in abundance sunlight.
