Warmer climate, city life greet principal

Michelle Beito is the principal of Sioux Valley Elementary School. Though a Minnesota native, Beito and her husband spent 28 years in Alaska before moving here this summer.

BROOKINGS – From their home in Alaska last January, Michelle and Howard Beito decided to send their chocolate lab puppy to South Dakota to train as a pheasant hunting dog. Howard has been hunting in the state for several years and he wanted a little more help than his other lab, trained on waterfowl, could provide.

“So, he starts looking up in South Dakota where he can get his dog trained, right?” said Michelle, the new principal of Sioux Valley Elementary School in Volga.

“He found a dog trainer in Arlington. I hadn’t applied for this job, I didn’t know about this job, it didn’t even come open until March. So, we lined up the whole thing for our dog to be trained; turned out it’s right down the road! How crazy is that?”
