• Backs up Daugaard in dispute with Canadian Pacific Railway
BROOKINGS – Two Brookings organizations have joined Gov. Dennis Daugaard in his call for the federal Surface Transportation Board (STB) to make sure Canadian Pacific Railway lives up to the promises it made when it bought the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad.
The DM&E is now for sale, and Gov. Daugaard and leaders in the agribusinesses and industries along the South Dakota track are concerned about continued service by the railroad to South Dakota ag producers and manufacturers.
The Brookings City Council on Tuesday lent its support to Gov. Daugaard’s efforts, passing a detailed resolution it will immediately send to the STB.
Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Heidi Gullickson said her board had also sent a letter to the STB, expressing the city’s concerns.
The resolution passed by the council in a special gathering Tuesday detailed the community’s concerns: Brookings is a regional employment and trade center and home to a number of industries that rely heavily on rail service.
