News carrier knocked off bicycle by car

Posted: Thursday, Aug 29th, 2013

BROOKINGS – A 12-year-old Brookings Register news carrier was slightly injured Tuesday in a car-bike collision at the intersection of Orchard Drive and 17th Avenue.

The mishap occurred about 4 p.m.

The boy had stopped at the stop sign at the intersection and then proceeded westward on Orchard.

The driver of the car, Rachel Carlson, 23, of Brookings, had also stopped, said an officer who witnessed the accident, but in the busy traffic she failed to see the cyclist and she struck the rear of his bike.

Both vehicles were reportedly traveling slowly.

The boy was knocked off the bike, injuring his arm and legs. The ambulance wasn’t called, but a family member later took the boy to the hospital emergency department for treatment.

There was no damage to the car, but the bike had a bent rear wheel and foot pedal, the officer reported.

There were no citations given.
