BROOKINGS – People who watch the Sioux Falls television stations to get weather information will note that while Brookings' name appears on their screens along with other cities, the temperature and other information is conspicious by its absence.
Because of construction under way at the Brookings Regional Airport, the AWOS (Airport Weather Observation Station) has been deactivated.
Airport Manager Philip Tiedman said the station could be down as long as a year. He noted that the primary purpose of AWOS is to provide weather information to pilots. In conjunction with airport construction, the Federal Aviation Administration is upgrading the AWOS.
State Climatologist Dennis Todey explained, "That automated weather station goes to the FAA, and that data gets to the National Weather Service and the media."
