Learn a language – thanks to the library

Posted: Monday, Aug 5th, 2013

BROOKINGS – The Brookings Public Library is now offering a new online language learning program called Pronunciator.

Pronunciator is the world's largest language-learning service. It offers 75 languages to learn, and the ability to learn them in 50 different languages, providing a way to learn a new language for more than 95 percent of the world's population.

Pronunciator teaches a full range of language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking –in a structured, building-block approach. Within each language, Pronunciator offers up to 10,000 phrases, 354 hours of audio lessons, 8 types of interactive drills, 2000 downloadable PDF phrasebooks, and six types of scored quizzes. Users have the option of learning through guided "Postcards" courses or from the ground up by building their own conversations.

The service is appropriate for young and old, says library Director Elvita Landau. Units that are particularly kid-friendly are marked with a special icon.

Users will need a Brookings Public Library card to access Pronunciator. The service can be accessed from the library’s website (www.brookingslibrary.org) and used from any home, work or Library computer. Technical requirements include a web browser that has Flash installed and JavaScript enabled, speakers or headphones to hear the audio content, and a computer microphone if pronunciation analysis is desired.

For more information, contact the library at 692-9407.
