Women, kids take aim at area shooting events

Posted: Wednesday, Jul 31st, 2013

BROOKINGS – “Bring your daughters, but leave your husbands at home,” Mike Kervin suggested as he extended an invitation to prospective participants for the Women in the Outdoors (WITO) Field Day this Saturday, Aug. 3.

The second-annual event for females 10 and up is designed to acquaint area women with the basics of firearms, says Kervin, who’s president of the co-sponsoring National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF).

The event, which begins at 9 a.m. at the Beacon Hill Gun Club and runs until 2 p.m., is a “girls’ day out,” expected to draw 35-50 women who want to see what firing a gun is all about.

For a $5 fee – to cover the costs of ammo and a hot-dog lunch – women learn gun-handling basics and get an opportunity to fire a rifle, a shotgun and a handgun. There’ll be an archery setup, too, for those who might want to consider a bow-and-arrow approach to hunting.
