BROOKINGS – Brookings Area United Way this year has collaborated with local organizations and individuals to plant a community garden. That garden will allow fresh produce to be distributed to local feeding organizations supported by United Way.

Organizations like Feeding Brookings, the Brookings County Food Pantry, Harvest Table, 60’s Plus Dining and the Brookings Backpack Project work together to help provide food, compassion and a sense of security to nearly 5,000 area residents facing food insecurity each year.

“Hunger exists in our community. In fact, 13.8 percent of Brookings County’s children are facing food insecurity, which is defined as a lack of access to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members,” says Kate Treiber, United Way executive director. “Collaborating on this community garden project is one way we can all work together to support local programs that are helping to put food in the hands of those who need it most.”
