BROOKINGS – The Brookings Area Quilters’ Guild will on Saturday, during the Bloomin’ Quilt Party 5, honor one of its own who died suddenly this year.

Vikki Schaak, who hosts the party at her home, said the guild lost Karen Spurgeon very suddenly to ovarian cancer. Spurgeon died about six weeks after she was diagnosed with the disease.

“She was the main driving force behind the Quilts of Valor,” Schaak said.

A national program, Quilts of Valor works to provide every area soldier or their family with a large quilt, usually made of red, white and blue fabrics. The Brookings Area Quilters’ Guild has presented every member of the local National Guard unit with a quilt, as well as given them to other soldiers in the area.

In Spurgeon’s honor, Saturday’s quilt party will include a display of her quilts and a special memorial for her.
