Marie A. Mathison, 82, formerly of Arlington, died Sunday, July 28, 2013, at Brookview Manor in Brookings.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Friday at Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Arlington. Burial is in the West Sinai Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Johnson-Henry Funeral Home in Arlington and preceding services in the church on Friday.
Marie was born Nov. 4, 1930, at Egan to Johannes and Astrid (Myrseth) Wanberg. She attended Moody County Public Schools and graduated from Wentworth in 1948. She was a student in the junior secretarial course at Nettleton Commercial College prior to working as an office clerk for various businesses in Sioux Falls.
During the summer of 1950, Marie accompanied her parents to their childhood homes in Norway. Upon returning home, the family moved to the Sinai area, where she met and later married Donald Mathison on Aug. 10, 1954 at Sinai Lutheran Church in a double wedding ceremony with her brother Harald and Donald’s sister Carol.
Then they settled on the family farm where they raised their four daughters. They moved into Arlington in February, 2009 and joined Calvary Free Lutheran Church. In August, 2009, they moved to Brookview Manor in Brookings.
She thoroughly enjoyed her life as a farmer’s wife working alongside her husband, cooking for her family and the harvest crews, gardening and food preservation.
Many remember her for the aroma and flavor of her homemade breads.
She also enjoyed singing, teaching Sunday School, participating in the ladies group at church and in the Happy Moments Club. She enjoyed being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Rich) Stoebner of Henderson, Nev., Marlys of Brookings, Doris (Rev. Tim) Newman of Arlington and Joyce (Randy) Jacobs of Rushmore, Minn.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her siblings, Margot Moeller of Vermillion, Ole (Vi) Wangberg of Tuscon, Ariz., Ludvig Wangberg of Rogers, Minn., John (Grace) Wangberg of Sinai and Albert (Lorna) Wangberg of Clarkfield, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband and siblings Ida Wright, Martin, Peter, HeleneBerven, and Harold.
