Posted: Tuesday, Jul 16th, 2013

Bohlen had been using a push wheelchair for nearly a year but lacked the arm strength to get around as he wanted. Committee member Dave Miller, right, helped find the wheelchair for Bohlen. BROOKINGS – Al Bohlen jokes that now all he needs on his new electric wheelchair is a place to carry his shotgun. His neighbors in The Neighborhoods at Brookview joke that he just needs some racing stripes, or say they’re going to hide around the corner to stay out of his way.

That’s what Brookings’ Committee for People Who Have Disabilities hope their biannual drive for durable medical equipment can do for a lot of area residents. This year’s drive runs from July 21-27.

Bohlen has been a resident of Brookings Health System’s skilled nursing facility since last August and has been using a hand-propelled wheelchair until just recently.
