Susan Miller ushers her three chickens into a “portable run” outside her home in White on Wednesday afternoon. Miller approached the White City Council last year about relaxing the chicken laws; she brought her chickens home this May when the new law allowed it.

BROOKINGS – Their names are Goldie, Comet and Feisty. But no, Susan Miller and her husband Perry didn’t bring three chickens into their backyard in White as pets – they wanted fresh eggs.

Miller was the one who approached the White City Council in December, asking that councilors review the ordinance about keeping chickens in city limits. Thanks to Miller’s request, in May the council changed that required distance to 40 feet, allowing up to five chickens per home for a $5 annual permit.
