Should smoking, beer be banned in city parks?

Posted: Tuesday, Jul 9th, 2013

Hillcrest Park was the perfect place to enjoy an ice-cream treat Monday, and these Hutterite boys took advantage of a shaded park table to dig into their sundaes. The heavy use of city parks – particularly by kids like these – is prompting the Brookings Park & Recreation Board to review its policies on smoking and alcohol use in Brookings green spaces. • Park & rec board mulls policy for alcohol, tobacco use

BROOKINGS – You’ve just spent the afternoon at the nature park in Brookings, teaching your son and his neighborhood buddies the finer points of fishing for crappies. As you watch the boys having the time of their lives, you pop a cold Bud and fire up a small cigar. Another park visitor glares at you, and her look tells you she does not approve.

You’re an alumna of the Class of ’93, and you and your classmates have gathered at Pioneer Park for a summer reunion – you’re even using the bandshell stage for your program. And you want to know: Can I serve wine at the cheerleaders’ reception tent? As more and more community residents spend time at city parks and recreational facilities, the questions are bound to pop up: Can we have a beer with our picnic at Hillcrest? Is there any kind of smoking ban in force in local parks?

Those are exactly the questions the Brookings Park and Recreation Board is asking, and their discussions this summer likely will result in a written statement of policy, perhaps even an ordinance or two governing smoking and alcohol on city premises.
