• Residents can shoot fireworks through July 7 – but not in town
BROOKINGS – Fire Chief Darrell Hartmann wants everybody in Brookings to enjoy the Fourth of July fireworks, but he also wants them to take special care with the “fire” part of their celebration.
Independence Day can keep local fire crews and police hopping, the chief said, dealing not only with complaints from neighbors but with grass fires started by Roman candles and bottle rockets. There’s also the possibility of injuries caused by the same kinds of displays.
“With the recent rains, our fields have had a chance to green up,” Hartmann said, “but there’s still a lot of dry material out there.”
