Cremation rates on the rise in Brookings

Bad economy, lack of religion the cause?

BROOKINGS Over the past 40 years Terry Spitzenberger has been a funeral director for 3,200 to 4,000 services. When he started in the 1970s, "it was all traditional." Burial in the ground.

Not so anymore. Over the years he has seen "a gradual increase in cremations: 40 percent in 40 years."

Now the manager of Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, he sees that rate accelerating.

The Cremation Association of North America backs him up, noting that today 41 percent of American funerals involve cremation; and a recent lengthy report in Time magazine predicts that "by 2017, one out of two Americans will choose cremation over burial."
