Council takes long look at capital needs

• Five-year CIP gets city council’s attention

BROOKINGS – It takes big money to run a city the size of Brookings.

Total expenditures for government operations in 2012 came to $28.7 million, and that’s excluding the operation of Brookings Municipal Utilities and the Brookings Health System.

But just like any homeowner, in fact any Brookings family, the city administration and the city council have to sit down every year and draw up a budget.

That’s what they did at last week’s council meeting, spending nearly half of a four-hour session going over the city’s capital improvement plan (CIP) for the next five years – department by department, item by item.
