Herb Vaske, 83, of Brookings, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Elkton. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Eidsness-Zink Funeral Chapel in Elkton, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
Herbert Donald Vaske was born Jan. 1, 1930, on the family farm near Elkton, to Ben and Margaret (Tighe) Vaske. He attended country school and graduated from Elkton High School in 1948. He worked for area farmers and then served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 17, 1952, until Jan. 14, 1954, during the Korean Conflict. On Oct. 14, 1967, he married Mildred M. Hegerfeld at St. William’s Catholic Church in Aurora. Herb continued farming until his retirement in 1992.
Herb was a member of St. William’s Catholic Parish in Aurora and the American Legion in Elkton. He was a life member of the Elks.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Vaske of Brookings; two sons: Scott Vaske of Wessington Springs and Troy Vaske of New Hope, Minn.; a daughter, Pamela Hegerfeld, of Spencer, Iowa; a sister, Mary Reiner, of St. Paul, Minn.; four brothers: Clayton (Arlene) Vaske of Brookings, Kenneth (Dora) Vaske of Watertown, Jim (Beverly) Vaske of Surprise, Ariz., and Bill (Bermae) Vaske of Elkton.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Margaret Ann; sisters Dorothy Vaske, Iris Quinn, Genevieve Brown, Delores Patterson, and Mavis McCauley; and brothers, Fred and Leo Vaske.
