Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings with a liturgical wake service beginning at 7 p.m.
Christian James McKeown was born on Jan. 24, 2013, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, the son of Landon and Elena (Cruz) McKeown. Although Christian passed away so soon, his determination, smile and laugh lit up a room, touched many lives, and created an endless love for his mom, dad, brothers and his entire family. He was a fighter, battling from the beginning through struggles. He showed his strength and was his family’s little hero. He loved his three older brothers and they all loved to laugh and play together. To his mother, he was like a present on Christmas morning, getting up every morning he would greet everyone with a smile. To his father, he was an inspiration. He did so much in his short life that many wish to achieve in a lifetime and he conquered it with never-ending happiness.
The family wrote “Christian taught everyone that each day is a God given gift. We don’t understand or know why, but we do understand and know that one day we will be reunited in God’s Kingdom; where we know Christian’s heart and body are perfect. He is our special angel in heaven holding us. Christian now lives in heaven with many family members who will cradle him with loving arms, until we can hold him again.”
He is survived by his parents, Landon and Elena McKeown of Brookings; three brothers, Caden, Cole and Keegan, of Brookings; his maternal grandparents, David and Mary Lou Cruz, of Lake Norden; his paternal grandparents, Rick and Rea McKeown, of Brookings and James and Marla Mitchell of Estelline; great grandmother, Leatrice Vanderbush of Brookings and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandparents, Louis and Regina Yamka and Eduardo and Asuncion Cruz; paternal great-grandparents, Everett and Fern McKeown and Lawrence Vanderbush.
