Dowtown center becomes new storm shelter in Brookings

• Parks & Rec building will be open to public when storms hit

BROOKINGS – It’s beginning to look a lot like severe storm season. And while the former storm shelter has been taken over by the Brookings Police Department, the county’s emergency manager wants everyone to know there’s still a safe place for them when the skies threaten something more than rain: The Brookings Park and Rec building at the corner of Main Avenue and Front Street.

The basement of that building includes a large hallway, lunchroom with multiple booths for seating, and working bathrooms. This is where people can go to take cover.

“As long as they’re down here, they’ll be safe. The safest they’re going to be anywhere in Brookings,” said Bob Hill, head of the Brookings County Development Department, which includes emergency management.
