Single SDSU prof always knew she wanted a family  so she found one

BROOKINGS It started with three empty bedrooms.

When Jeannie French moved into her house in Brookings 18 years ago, people asked why she chose one with so many bedrooms. Why would a single, ceramics professor at South Dakota State University want so much extra space? For French, the answer was simple: so there was room when she became a mother.

Nine months later, in May 1995, French stood in an airport terminal. One by one, passengers exiting the airplane walked past her until there were just two: a 9-month-old baby carried by a flight attendant. Passengers from the airplane stopped and snapped photos as the attendant handed French the baby. He was her adopted son. And she named him Nicholas.
