City-county building security beefed up

BROOKINGS – In Connecticut, a disturbed young man walks into an elementary school carrying a semiautomatic rifle. And he murders 20 children and six adults. In Boston, two young men declare a jihad against their adopted country and on a crowded city street detonate their high-powered explosives, killing and maiming dozens.

It’s a sad fact that these are dangerous times, that public facilities and public events have become targets for the angry and the deranged. And it’s a sad fact that violent acts can take place just as easily in a small town in the Heartland as in an East Coast metropolis.

That’s why key personnel at the Brookings City & County Government Center have had to undergo “active shooter training,” and that’s why the security of the building itself is being beefed up – “hardened,” as the defense experts call it – to keep occupants safe in the event of a criminal attack.

When the most recent recommendations are put into place, the Brookings City and County Government Center will have some of the most sophisticated safety and security protections of any public building in the Midwest.
