SIOUX FALLS – It should come as no surprise that the weather wasn’t the attraction at the 2013 Howard Wood-Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls on Friday.

Luckily, area athletes were able to overcome Mother Nature and turn in some top performances.

Alexis Gannon continued her dominance in the triple jump, as the Bobcat junior won the event with a mark of 38 feet, 2 1/4 inches. Teammate Kaitlyn Hadley eclipsed the state meet automatic qualifying standard with a fifth-place distance of 35-5 1/4.

On the track, Deubrook Area senior Evelyn Klein qualified for the Class A meet as she finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.47 seconds. Sturgis’ Brooke Ireland won the event in 57.27.

The Bobcat quartet of Addison DeHaven, Patrick Chapin, Jimmy Forman and Justice Lamer finished fourth in the Class AA 4x800 relay in 8:09.46 as the top four teams were separated by less than seven seconds.

The Estelline quartet of Savannah Dolezal, Abbi Benning, Morgan Krein and Leeanah Tekrony clocked a 10:48.36 to finish sixth in the girls’ Class B 4x800-meter relay.
