BROOKINGS – Caitlin Gerdes is a rare student, and it’s not just because she loves to do her calculus homework.

This spring, the graduating South Dakota State University mechanical engineering major was notified that she is a recipient of a Graduate Research Fellowship Program from the National Science Foundation, one of only 2,000 given nationwide. The award provides $30,000 per year for up to three years to complete her graduate education. The last SDSU student to receive the award was Laura Baumberger in 2001.
