BROOKINGS – Brookings’ Mickelson Middle School is becoming a perennial powerhouse in the South Dakota Geographic Bee.

With another first-place finish this month, an MMS student has won that contest during five of the past six years.

It began with Changlin Ke, an eighth-grader five years ago, and continued with Alex Kimn, who won state during his sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade years and took fourth nationally two years ago. Last year a Sioux Falls seventh-grader named Adam Wiegert interrupted the streak.

But this year, MMS eighth-grader Mark Vanderzee took back the crown as he beat Wiegert and the other 72 South Dakota fourth- through eighth-grade contestants on April 5 for a cash prize, a National Geographic DVD set and a trip to the national contest next month.
