• Finding ancestors' graves goes digital

BROOKINGS – "It's kind of been in the genes and handed down for four generations, and that's where I picked up on it."

Platte native Larry Cool, the former director of Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings and now retired, is the fourth generation of funeral directors. His great-grandmother, Bertha Cool, started the cemetery association in Platte. When Cool was "fairly young in the 1950s," his grandmother was "manually databasing and drawing maps of all the cemeteries around Platte and the Charles Mix County area. She was one of the people on the board for the cemetery. She had me come in and help her."
