• Kubal still wants ban on mixed martial arts at Swiftel
BROOKINGS – The Brookings City Council’s Tuesday-night discussion of mixed martial arts (MMA) lived up to its billing. There was no cage fighting involved, but the give-and-take was lively, and it was mixed. Totally mixed.
Councilor Ope Niemeyer defended cage fighting as a true sport, but Mayor Tim Reed likened it to a barroom brawl. Mike McClemans couldn’t care less whether the fights are staged at the Swiftel Center, and Jael Thorpe just wants to stop talking about it and get on with other city business. The mayor wants to regulate it, and John Kubal still wants to ban it.
And Tom Richter, executive director of the Swiftel Center, says he just wants to make money for the city.
The upshot of more than three-quarters of an hour of discussion is that the council will revisit the topic at its May 21 meeting.
