Michigan lawmakers are pushing for legislation to regulate amateur mixed martial arts to protect fighters from injury and disease, and South Dakota lawmakers this winter approved legislation to create a commission to oversee the sport here as well. BROOKINGS – This weekend’s cage fight will be the last one ever staged in the Swiftel Center, if John Kubal has his way.

Kubal took off the gloves at Tuesday’s city council meeting, declaring that he wants cage fighting and mixed martial arts competitions banned from all public facilities in Brookings.

Kubal’s fellow councilors agreed to reopen discussions on the fight ban, voting 6-1 to put the item on a future agenda. Only Councilor Jael Thorpe, who felt the issue had been thoroughly argued in the past, voted against it.

What caused Kubal to throw down the gauntlet was an ad for the cage fights that appeared in Tuesday’s edition of The Brookings Register.
