BROOKINGS – Taxation and funding were big topics of conversation, but so were communication, special education, pre-K, getting parents involved, traffic troubles, working with the Legislature and the need for a new elementary school, during Saturday’s school board candidate forum.

Hosted by the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee and moderated by Bob Otterson, the forum ran from 9-10:30 a.m. Inside the Brookings City & County Government Center, candidates Marysz Rames, Dennis Bielfeldt, Van Fishback and Larry Rogers answered 12 questions in total and gave opening and closing remarks. Questions came from the audience or were submitted through the Chamber’s website.

One question dear to the heart of many teachers addressed current educational themes such as Common Core State Standards, Charlotte Danielson Framework for Teaching, the Smarter Balanced assessment consortium and outcomes. It asked candidates: "What is your understanding of some of these current themes in education and how do you expect them to impact the school district and its classrooms, the learning that goes on within the buildings?”
