What does future hold for soccer?

• Futbol Club asks school district to sanction sport at HS level

BROOKINGS – The Brookings Futbol Club wants the Brookings School District to sanction soccer as a high school sport by the fall of 2014.

A representative for the club presented the request at a Brookings School Board work session this week and plans to formally ask for the change during a future regular board meeting.

Right now, high school soccer in Brookings is a club sport that uses the Bobcat mascot. Athletes and their families pay to play.

But transition to a high school-sanctioned sport means the school district would have to pick up the tab, with the combined total for both boys’ and girls’ teams estimated at anywhere from $29,000 to $44,000 per year.
