New ‘Memory Care’ comes to Brookings

Posted: Wednesday, Mar 20th, 2013

Sheila Gummer, director of the Edgewood Vista Memory Care community in Brookings, shows off a "memory cue case," a shadow box on the wall outside a resident's room. Holding small familiar memorabilia, it can provide a visual cue to helping a resident recognize his or her room.

BROOKINGS – Caring for someone who's aging, whether it's a parent or another family member, is never easy. The task often comes with physical and emotional demands that an unpaid and untrained caregiver may not be equipped to handle.

But the problems start to compound when that loved one suffers from memory loss. Suddenly your relative needs even more supervision and help with even more tasks. It can be a full-time, stressful job.

And nationally, it's one that more and more Americans are taking on.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, up to 5.3 million Americans currently have Alzheimer’s disease. By 2050, the number is expected to more than double due to the aging population.
