Stepping down, but not slowing down

The Hon. Lee Ann Pierce stands on the steps of the Brookings County Courthouse, a place she’s called home for the past 22 years. On Friday, she’ll retire from her post as magistrate judge for the Third Judicial Circuit.

BROOKINGS – Some people’s definition of retirement is a little different from what the dictionary says it is.

When the Hon. Lee Ann Pierce hands in her gavel – figuratively speaking – later this week, she’ll be leaving a magistrate court bench she has occupied for 22 years.

She’ll be leaving behind the thousands of DWIs, the public intoxications, the bad check writers and the partyers run amok who have stood before her over the years.

She’ll probably miss every one of them – she’s still optimistic that most will correct their errors and emerge from their court experiences as better people.

But though Pierce is retiring, she’s doesn’t plan on “slowing down” one bit.
