SIOUX FALLS – A quick glance at the Class AA field, and what each team has done this season, shows that it’s Roosevelt’s tournament to lose. The Rough Riders come into Thursday’s SDHSAA Class AA Boys’ State Basketball Tournament at the Sioux Falls Arena with a 21-1 record – with that lone loss being a 16-point setback at Marshall (Minn.) on Feb. 8.
Roosevelt did have a couple of other games that went down to the wire – a 64-62 overtime win at cross-town rival Lincoln on Jan. 29; a 58-56 home win over Pierre in the third game of the season; and a 76-72 triumph over The Rock (Fla.) in the Mike Miller Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell on Dec. 29. Other than an eight-point win over Brookings on Feb. 19, the Rough Riders have won the rest of their games by double digits.
The aforementioned Governors and Bobcats come into the tournament as the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively, with nearly identical records. ...
Brookings and Roosevelt face off in first-round state action tonight, 7:45 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Arena.
