James Straw, 77, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at his home.
A memorial service is at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Bethel Lutheran Church of Astoria. Burial is at a later date.
James Allen Straw was born June 5, 1935, in New York to Windsor and Pamela (Powers) Straw. In 1936 the family moved to Brookings. James attended school in Brookings and graduated from Brookings High School in 1953. He then attended South Dakota State University.
On May 3, 1955, James married Elaine Lucas. They lived in Brookings and White while James worked in Brookings.
He graduated from SDSU in 1961. They moved to Inver Grove Heights, Minn., where James worked at Unisys as a computer programmer for 30 years.
In 1992 they moved to an acreage near Toronto and then in 2003 they moved to Astoria.
James is survived by his wife, Elaine Straw; four children, Steven (Kitty), Peggy (Rick), Brian (Traci) and Bradley (Lance); grandchildren; great-grandchildren and a sister, Anne.
James was preceded in death by his son, Terry; a sister, Susan and a brother, Howard.
