• No challengers in city race
BROOKINGS – There will be a school board election in Brookings this spring, but there won’t be one for city council.
Four candidates have declared for the two school board vacancies, but only the two council incumbents – Deputy Mayor Keith Corbett and Jael Thorpe – filed papers by the 5 p.m. Friday deadline. That means they’ll get automatic, three-year extensions.
The school board contest will offer district voters some interesting choices. Brookings developer Dennis Bielfeldt was a midday filer Friday for one of the two school board chairs up for grabs. And incumbent Marysz Rames filed her nominating petitions only minutes before the deadline.
