Meet ‘The March King’

Posted: Thursday, Feb 7th, 2013

Keith Brion as John Philip Sousa

• Guest conductor to bring John Philip Sousa to life

BROOKINGS – John Philip Sousa last played in Brookings on Oct. 3, 1928. On Friday, almost 85 years after that concert, the spirit of the “March King” will return.

Of course, it won’t really be Sousa, but it will be as close as any modern band can muster. Keith Brion, the world’s foremost authority on the composer of “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” will serve as guest conductor of the SDSU Symphonic Band concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Larson Concert Hall of the Performing Arts Center on the campus of South Dakota State University.

The concert, which is free, is part of the three-day South Dakota In-service Music Conference hosted by the SDSU Music Department.
