• Commissioners worried about losing federal money for emergency management salary

BROOKINGS – Brookings County staff has worked out a plan for maximizing the leadership of its Emergency Management and Planning and Zoning departments. Commissioners like it, or at least like the direction they’re headed. Trouble is, that plan would make the county lose more than $25,000 per year in federal funding.

Todd Struwe, previous Emergency Management director, resigned his job effective Jan. 8. At that time the commission appointed Bob Hill, director of planning and zoning, as interim director.

During a Jan. 22 meeting, commissioners talked about making Hill head of both departments. They asked Commission Assistant and Human Resources Director Stephanie Ellwein to meet with Hill and list activities for which the Emergency Management Department is responsible. They also asked them to draft a proposal for combining the two departments.
