Elsie Hookie - Lake Preston June 10, 1916 Jan. 27, 2013

Elsie Hookie, 96, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at the Golden Living Center in Arlington.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January at the Lake Preston Lutheran Church with the Rev. Wanda McNeill officiating. Burial is in the Lake Preston Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnson-Henry Funeral Chapel in Lake Preston and preceding services in the church on Thursday.

Elsie Marjorie Lien, was born on June 10, 1916, in Clark County, Naples to Edward and Barbra (Babler) Lien. The Lien family made their home in the Bryant area, where Elsie attended country school

Elsie married Charles Albert Hookie Jr. on May 15, 1935 at De Smet. They had six sons and a daughter. Her husband, Charles died March 27, 1978. Elsie was exceptionally strong in her faith when her children, Clarence, Richard, Vera and Dale each died.

Elsie first and foremost was a loving mother to her seven children. She was a long-time member of Lake Preston Lutheran Church. She also worked at the Lake Preston Memorial Manor and was the local Avon Lady in the Lake Preston area.

Elsie also had a talent for painting ceramics and quilting. She made each one of her grandchildren their own special quilt and continued with her great-grandchildren until her eyesight started to diminish.

Elsie continued to live in her home in Lake Preston until it was time for her to receive additional help, moving her to the Lake Preston Memorial Manor. When the Lake Preston Memorial Manor closed, she found exceptional care at the Golden Living Center in Arlington.

She is survived by her children, Donald (Judy) Hookie of Centerville, Darrell Hookie of Brookings and Douglas (Jolene) Hookie of David City, Neb.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Delaine Hookie of Lake Preston and Nancy Hookie of Albion, and a sister-in-law Joan Hookie of Rock Ledge, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three sons, Clarence,

Richard and Dale; a daughter, Vera Shultz and four sisters Bertha Sjorberg, Hollis Sjoberg, Lanes Wadsworth and Leone Aaker.
