Jens Jensen, 88, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Dougherty Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Thursday at Brandon Lutheran. Burial is at Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings. Visitation is at Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls on Wednesday from 2-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m.
Jens N. Jensen was born Nov. 9, 1924, in Denmark.
Jens was born to Karl and Laura (Christiansen) Jensen and emigrated from Denmark to eastern South Dakota at the age of 3. Jens graduated from Aurora High School in 1942.
After high school, Jens served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy. He worked on a minesweeper during World War II from 1943-1946 before returning to Brookings where he farmed and was active with the Brookings VFW.
In 1963, Jens married Edna L. (Young) and joined her three daughters near Brookings. One year later the couple celebrated the birth of their daughter and Jens eventually moved his career and family to Valley Springs. Jens retired from farming in 1987 and moved to Sioux Falls with Edna. Jens continued to work with the USPS and in agriculture until officially retiring at the age of 80.
When not spending time on the farm, Jens and his wife were avid travelers. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing, baseball, golf and spoiling his dog.
Jens is survived by three daughters Kay Rose of Sioux Falls, Lori (Rick) Dump of Valley Springs, and DeeAnn Jensen of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his dog, Lexie.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Edna; brother, Paul; two sisters, Agnes and Anna; and a daughter, Jolene Baldwin.
