Church organist playing for 70-plus years

AURORA  In the nearly 90 years since its founding, the First English Lutheran Church of Aurora has had two organists. Elaine Waples, the present organist, has been playing since 1940. The first organist, Elaine's mother, served in that post from the church's founding in 1923 until her daughter took over.

"I was 11 years old when I started," Elaine said. "It was necessity. My mother was the organist here and she had to have surgery; in those days when you had surgery, you were laid up a long time."

Laughing a little, Elaine said, "She never took it back. She said she had a daughter who could play."

Elaine played piano as a child and found the transition to a pump-pipe organ was not that difficult. She admitted that "it was a challenge; you had to remember to pump."
