Arlys Ormseth, 82, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at her daughters home on Lake Cochrane near Gary.
A celebration of her life will be held this summer with family and friends at Lake Cochrane. No formal services will be held. Birk Funeral Home of Canby is entrusted with the arrangements.
Arlys Vivian Ormseth was born on Jan. 26, 1930 in Canby, Minn. to Ralph W. and Augusta E. (Kraft) Shippy. She graduated from Canby High School and enrolled in teachers training in Canby. She then went on to St. Cloud State and Mankato to further her education to become a teacher. She taught for more than 40 years in Clear Lake, Taunton, Gary and country schools in this area. Arlys taught kindergarten through sixth grade and she was happiest teaching sixth graders. Education was very important to Arlys.
Arlys married Russell Ormseth on Oct. 2, 1953, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Canby, Minn. She was a lifelong resident of Canby minus a few years spent in Washington.
She enjoyed quilting, reading and collecting items she bought at auctions. She also enjoyed traveling especially to Alaska. Time spent with her golden retrievers was joyful and time spent with her family and friends was priceless.
Arlys was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Canby.
She is survived by five children: Jim (Faye) Ormseth of Bonita Springs, Fla., Richard (Steve) Ormseth of Washington, DC, Carol (Jeff) Jung of Brookings, Jane (Mark Garrow) Ormseth of (Lake Cochrane) Gary, , Judy (Joe) Petersen of Minneota, Minn.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Ormseth; two brothers, Wayne and Wilbur Shippy and one sister, Dorothy Shippy-Ormseth.
