County road will be 45 mph, not 35 mph

Posted: Friday, Jan 25th, 2013

BROOKINGS – A two-mile stretch of 34th Avenue South where the Brookings County Highway Department had requested drivers be limited to 35 mph will instead drop to 45 mph.

The change affects 34th Avenue South, a gravel road also known as County Road 21. The lower speed limit will start at Eighth Street South and continue two miles south, to the intersection with 32nd Street South.

Brookings County commissioners approved a first reading of the change to 35 mph – from the county’s default speed limit of 55 mph – on Jan. 8 without discussion. On Tuesday they held a public hearing, during which no one spoke. But Commissioner Ryan Krogman said he had driven that stretch of road the day before and felt better about a 45 mph limit.
