LaVonne M. Johnson Brookings June 17, 1922 – Jan. 15, 2013

LaVonne M. Johnson, 90, formerly of Rapid City, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at Brookings Health System.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

LaVonne Marjorie Prehn was born June 17, 1922, in White, the daughter of Oscar and Algona (Bader) Prehn.

She grew up and attended school in the Deuel County area, graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1940.

LaVonne married Maynard K. Johnson on Aug. 31, 1940, in Brandt. In the early years of their marriage, they made their home in Clear Lake and Milbank areas. They owned a dairy in Estelline.

In 1952, they made their home in Hot Springs and in 1960 they moved and made their home in Rapid City.

LaVonne was proud of her career as a secretary in the ROTC at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City.

Maynard died Oct. 25, 1993. LaVonne continued to live in Rapid City until June of 2012 when she moved to the United Living Community in Brookings to be closer to family.

LaVonne was an active member at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rapid City.

LaVonne was an avid Rapid City Post No. 22 baseball fan, enjoying games every summer. She loved visiting with family and friends, enjoying their time and company.

She loved playing host to family and friends that would vacation in the Rapid City area, making everyone sign her guest book was a must before leaving.

Survivors include her brother, Marlo (Ruth) Prehn of Mountain View, Calif.; her sister, Myrna Prehn of Mountain View, Calif.; 11 nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard, a brother, Clinton and his wife Hazel Prehn and a nephew, Laron Prehn.
