Posted: Friday, Jan 11th, 2013

Madge Lucille Shaw 92, died on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, in Colfax, Iowa.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church in Brookings. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings.

Madge was born on March 27, 1920, in Aurora, the daughter of Herman and Caroline (Zimmerman) Ruedebusch. Madge grew up on a farm seven miles northwest of Elkton, during the Depression years. She attended grade school at Alton District No. 34. In 1934, the family moved to a farm in Fountain Community northeast of Brookings, and in 1937 she graduated from Aurora High School. She attended St. Paul Bible Institute, St. Paul, Minn., from 1943 until 1946. After graduation, Madge returned home, teaching D.V.B.S. in Elkton, Aurora, Bushnell and White. Madge also held child evangelism classes in Brookings.

In 1953, she joined the staff of Children’s Gospel Mission in Minneapolis, doing mission and camp work.

On June 8, 1955, she and Charles Arthur Shaw were married at the Mission. In 1956, they moved to South Dakota to her parental home in the Fountain community, where they farmed. They moved into Brookings in 1972. She was employed at the Brookings Hospital for 17 years. In 1981, they moved back to the farm.

Madge loved working in God’s good earth, enjoyed gardening, canning and sharing the over abundance with neighbors and friends. Always a lover of flowers, in later years her house plants were her delight. In past years and as long as she was able, she delighted in writing letters to her many missionary friends.

Very early in life, Madge accepted Jesus as her personal savior, and followed through this experience for all of her time on this earth. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Brookings for 36 years and then First Baptist Church in Colfax, Iowa. She was a member of the Gideon’s and Disabled American Veterans Auxiliaries in Brookings County. The farm home was sold in 1990, and they moved into Brookings, and in 1992, to Colfax, Iowa.

She is survived by her son, Dale (Lois) Shaw of Louisville, Ky.; her brother-in-law Stephen (Dorothy) Shaw of Hopkins, Minn., sisters-in-law Mary Shaw of Bloomington, Minn., and Arlene Shaw of Minnetonka, Minn.; two nephews; five nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles on Dec. 24, 1995, infant sister Vernice and her step-mother Lucille.
