Brookings’ sales tax numbers up

• Tax revenues highest since 2008

BROOKINGS – Despite the continuing budget battles in Washington, there’s evidence that the American economy just might be turning around.

While unemployment numbers remain high, sales of homes and autos are trending upward, and more and more forecasters are expressing optimism that the Great Recession may be behind us.

Things are clearly looking up in Brookings, Finance Manager Rita Thompson said this week.

Brookings hasn’t suffered the dramatic downturn other parts of the country have endured, and Thompson and City Manager Jeff Weldon are reporting that Brookings has gotten some of the best news it’s had in a long time: retail sales are booming, and residents are spending freely once again.
